At the heart of the Hallcrest brand are
our vineyard designated wines. Because each of these wines
is made from only one vineyard, they embody a specific region,
a unique microclimate and soil type, and a particular clonal
selection and viticultural practice. As so, these wines more
than any others begin in the vineyard. They are a partnership
between the grower and the winemaker to express the character
of the site and region during the growing and winemaking process.
To qualify as a Vineyard Designate, a wine must have strong
varietal, regional, and especially site-specific character
and most importantly, be of exceptional quality.

These are wines made from one grape variety
(i.e. Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, etc.). Therefore, our focus
is to bring out the flavors and qualities of the particular
variety. Varietals also express a regional character like
the Santa Cruz Mountains, but are not trying to emphasize
one specific vineyard like the Vineyard Designates. Though
sometimes sourced from a single vineyard, being able to blend
multiple vineyards to create the Varietals reduces the vintage
to vintage variation that is more common with Vineyard Designates.
